There is great concern among residents and visitors regarding the large number of unwanted abandoned puppies on Virgin Gorda.

The goal of ARC is to offer free spaying and neutering  to Virgin Gorda dogs whose owners might otherwise not avail themselves of this service.

Animal Rescue and Control of Virgin Gorda (ARC) is an active group of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. In our fifth year, we continue to address the problem of abandoned puppies and adult dogs and to promote education of residents to be more responsible and compassionate pet owners — slowly but surely we are winning !!!

The generous support of many has been instrumental in the overall success of this venture. We thank you very much and ask you once again for a donation large or small to keep our program moving on.

Due to the great generosity of The Albert Penick Foundation, who donated $1500.00, we were able to purchase an anesthesia unit/oxygen concentrator and a steel operating table so now we should be in the enviable position of having the vet come to us once or twice a month instead of carrying the animals to Tortola by ferry.  However, the government has not granted our veterinarian a clinic license on Virgin Gorda, so at this time we continue the arduous task of taking animals to Tortola.

Besides wild and unwanted dogs, there are many feral cats on Virgin Gorda.  This year, ARC is continuing a program started some 20 years ago by two expatriates.  Three Veterinarians and three students from Tufts University Veterinary School come to Virgin Gorda for ten days.  During this period, feral cats are trapped, vaccinated against feline leukemia and feline HIV, neutered and released where they were trapped.  ARC raises money to purchase plane tickets and arranges for accommodations and meals donated by local residents and  businesses.

To give you an idea of where your donation goes:

  • ARC has funded the neutering and spaying of 350 dogs and 200 cats. The Doctor's fees are $130.00 per female dog and $90.00 per male plus $28.00 for vaccination and worming.
  • ARC keeps track of all dogs and puppies placed in homes and schedules them to be spayed or neutered at the appropriate time.
  • ARC has rescued more than 100 puppies, kittens and mature animals, cared for them in our homes, and placed them with families.
  • ARC checks on the puppies/dogs we have placed in homes to make sure they are being cared for properly.
  • ARC responds to calls for animals in distress and does its best to bring them back to good health, neuter them and place them in good homes.
  • ARC offers pick-up and drop-off services.
  • ARC distributes information on heartworm, general worming, vaccinations and instructions for care after surgery.
  • ARC is purely a voluntary charity, no money is paid to any person for all of the work that is involved.

We now desperately need a small animal shelter and we are working towards that goal. At present, all rescue animals go to a few private homes for care, i.e. bottle feeding, washing, defleaing/deticking, socialization, medical treatment and housing until homes can be found for them — it's tough!

Please contribute to this worthwhile cause.  We really feel that we are accomplishing a great deal and want to continue offering free neutering/spaying services and education to animal owners – WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!
